From bilateral cooperation to LMU – China Academic Network

Within the last ten years LMU Munich has established a wide range of contacts and collaborations with outstanding partners and leading research universities in China in the fields of

Life Sciences
and Health

and Geosciences

and Social Sciences

As a continuation of this development, LMU has set up the China Academic Network (LMU-ChAN) with its main Chinese partnering universities, beginning in 2015. The Network currently includes the following partner institutions:

  • Peking University

  • Tsinghua University

  • Renmin University

  • Fudan University

  • Shanghai Jiaotong University

  • Sun Yat-sen University

  • Tongji University

  • Zhejiang University

  • Nanjing University

  • The Chinese University of Hong Kong

  • The University of Hong Kong

The LMU-ChAN Project is currently supported by grants from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, which include funding from the Excellence Initiative and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Funds obtained from the DAAD program “Strategic Partnerships and Thematic Networks” in 2015 were instrumental in the creation of the network, as they enabled the formation of comprehensive partnerships with the so-called “anchor partnering universities” PKU, Fudan, SJTU, ZJU and (since August 2017) CUHK.

Scientific Forum

A central element of the network is the annual Scientific Forum, a highly interdisciplinary event covering the whole range of cooperation areas: Medicine and Life Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences as well as Geo- and Environmental Sciences, and in which scientists from all LMU-ChAN partnering universities participate.

The goal of the annual Scientific Forum is to further existing interactions and support the development of new research cooperations by providing a platform for subject-based exchange and interdisciplinary dialogues.

The venue of the Forum alternates between LMU Munich and one of the partnering universities in China:

  1. LMU-ChAN Scientific Forum: LMU Munich from November 13-15, 2015.
  2. LMU-ChAN Scientific Forum: Zhejiang University in Hangzhou from November 20-22, 2016.
  3. LMU-ChAN Scientific Forum: LMU Munich from October 27 to 29, 2017.
  4. LMU-ChAN Scientific Forum: Peking University from November 22 to 24, 2018.
  5. LMU-ChAN Scientific Forum will be held at LMU Munich in 2020.
